Verifying the address in under a minute

A clone wins by being one character off in the middle. The checks below are the three that catch it, and none of them need more than the address bar and the list.

The prefix is not the check

Every Mars address opens with the same four letters, and that is the first thing a clone copies, because it is the easiest. A page that gets the prefix right is a page that has done the minimum. The prefix tells you the name is in the right family. It does not tell you the key behind it is the right one, and that is the part a phisher has to earn.

The tail is the check

The last six characters come from the same key material as the rest of the string, so they cannot be faked by pasting a good prefix onto a random middle. Read the tail on the page and read the tail in the address bar. When the two match, the middle is almost certainly the one you pasted, and when they do not, the page is not the one the address says it is.

The circuit, not the address

The third check is the one that is not about the string at all. A bad circuit makes a correct address look dead, and a reload makes it worse by stacking circuits. The fix is a new tab on a new circuit, and it clears more false alarms than any other move on this list. The address page has the full breakdown of what each part is.
